French culture spreading over the world

Back in July 2008, I was visiting Scotland. The time to give money to our bus driver came and, being a little clumsy sometimes, money fell on the floor. A french rude word came out of my mouth without any control. "merde". The scottish driver just said "Oh you're french?".
Back in the beginning of July, I was visiting the Temple of Heaven in Beijing, China and almost dropped my camera on the floor while shooting some picture. The same word came out of my mouth, still without any control. There were two korean girls next to me, also shooting some pic. One of them turned at me and said "Excuse-me, are you french?"
France got a long and complex history, a wide culture and many world heritage places. Why does this rude word seem to be so well known around the world ?
Merde.
