Like a bridge over troubled water

Aug 2006

That's what Simon and Garfunkel could say, but I guess the youngest ones never heard about this beautiful song. I'm leaving soon for a well deserved 1 week vacation. Many things are going on in my life, now, many changes are on the way and I really need to rest my mind.
Those bridges are from Beijing suburbs.

Chinese finger counting.

Aug 2006

Even counting by the fingers is a matter of culture. Here is the chinese way, inspired by their writing, where they reach 10 by just using one hand when most of french people will close their hands and open fingers one by one, to reach 10 by using 2 hands. Japanese people got a different way, but I always forgot to take pictures for it. On another hand, some friends started to count in binary mode by the fingers and they can reach 31 with only 1 hand. Believe me, 4 is a pretty rude number with the binary mode.

Chinese eggs

Aug 2006

The first is the so called "100 year-old egg" without the shell. This is actually just 3 months old and dipped for a while into a special mix of mud and grass so it can turn to this strange black color, making most of westerners run away instead of tasting it. The ones not running away won't feel the taste is very strong.
The second one is the salty egg.

Like every human being, this flower is looking for the sunlight.

China - Beijing - Niujie mosque

Jan 2006

Thanks to the a musleem friend of my wife, I had the chance to be allowed to enter in a 1000 year old mosque in beijng by the local imam. Not being a musleem, he just clearly asked me not to enter the praying room. Here are a few pictures, where the chinese and arabic writings meet each other.
