Traditionnal chinese wedding

The 4 tea pots and the 2 halves of the fruit in wich we drink alcohol.

The stage and the altar.
The purifying fire, and behind the apple and the saddle. The bride, her veil and the string linking us through generations. Our musicians.
Lifting up the veil for the first time.

What is going to follow is not the complete traditionnal ceremony, but what I experienced, due to circumstances. My familly was unable to attend the ceremony, due t the heavy snow in London and many cancelled flights. I wasn't supposed to live in my chinese familly flats : I was supposed to kidnap the bride. As well it wasn't convenient to ride a horse in Beijing.

Everything began by us staing in a private room. My mother in law fed me with tho rice balls stuffed with sweet sesame seeds. Good but hard to chew. By being well treated by her, I'm suppose to take a good care of my wife. Then she feeds her for the last time before she "leaves" the familly.

A red veil is now put on her head (in ancient times, the couple had never met beore teh wedding). We grab a red rope, symbol of what links us through different lives. I guide my wife to the stage by walking ahead on her left.

The bride has to walk over a fire, supposed to purify her from the evil. Here, the fire was replaced by a red piece of something.

On the way to the stage, we now meet an apple put on a saddle. Apple being said " pingguo" and saddle "ma an", "pingan" means "safe". Depending on the right or left foot chosed to kick the apple, we shall have either a son or a daughter. My wife having forgotten at the last time wich one was what, we're supposed to have a daughter.

We now face the guests; I still stand on the left of my wife.

The host gives me a stick used in the ancient time to weigh the goods on the markets. Their must be another metaphor on the pronouciation, but I forgot it. I use it to lift up the left corner of the veil to try to see her face "for the first time". The the right corner. At the third try, I'm allowed to take it all off. Still without touching her.

We then turn to the altar. My mum was supposed to light three encense sticks and to give them to the bride, but I finally had to do it. Being the future origin of the familly, my wife bows to the altar and place the three sticks on it.

When the host says "zheng yi guan" we have to tidy our clothes. "Gui" makes us sti on our knees. "Yi kou shou" makes us bow for the first time. "Qishen" makes us stand on our knees, and "zai kou shou" makes us bow for the second time. We'll bow a third time before standing up again.

If the candle holder hadn't decided to keep on falling on the curtains, we would have lit a phoenix and a dragon candle.

At that time, our parents get on stage and the maid brings the 4 pots of tea. We have to give one of each to our parents in law, and call them "baba" and "mama" (dad and mum). Then we do another three bows to our parents.

Instead of providing the tea to my parents, a video of them on a large screen is shown. The recorded it in the snow, but the laptop had troubles at playing it. The host explained the problem by the bad weather disturbing the live transmission through satelites. Nobody notied it shuould have been night in france, at that time.

We have to go on our knees for the third time. We bow to each to other, touch our heads on the first bow, and keep the position a long time on the third one.

Now we have to drink alcohol in the two halves of the shell of a dry fruit. After exchanging our halves three time, we tie to the two halves together with a red string. Meaning easy to understand, I guess.

The host now shows a date and a chestnut and asks my wife to name it. In mandarin, their name sound like "early" and "give birth".

I'm then shown a peanut and have to name it. Husheng sounds like "several kids".

I have now to hold 7 dumplings to my wife, tied to a small string. She has to eat and reply to the question "sheng bu sheng" (is that cooked?). She has to reply "cooked". Probably another metaphor about birth, by i've lost my note about it.

That's then my shot to eat something held by my wife. To the question "xian bu xian" (salty or not?) a (small) pronouciation mistake makes me say "stinky"; Everybody laughed out loud. Except me and a few other foreigners who didn't udnerstand ebfore hours what i said.

We then turn again to face the guests and bow to them before we leave the stage. We still hold this red string linking us.

While our guests are all eating lunch, we change our clothes and come back to thank all of them, one by one, by giving them sweets, alcohol or cigarette. In exchange we receive our wedding presents.

Mariage chinois traditionnel

The english translation will come later (tomorrow if i can find time to type that much).
Selle se prononce "ma an".

Wedding

The chinese wedding is now done. The ceremony followed more or less the ancient chinese way. More or less in the sense a part of the ritual was supposed to be done by my parents who were kept in France by severe weather conditions. This ceremony was full of symbols and metaphors. I'll need some time to organize and translate my notes to english. Strangely, my wife and I are the first foreign-chinese couple able to communicate by a common language our wedding host met.

Wedding candies

Each guest to this wedding will be offered a box of candies. Some other people, not close enough to be invited to the ceremony, will be given a bag of candies. You can see on it the red colour wich is related to the luck and hapiness in the chinese culture, the drawing of an happy couple and hanzi (chinese letter) wich means happiness (or something similar). The rest of the candies bought for this event will be displayed on the tables for decoration purpose - a decoration wich can be eaten by guests if they feel doing it.

Chinese bride

Here are sone pictures from the make-up, hair style and clothes trial of my beautiful chinese bride. As this blog is public, I'll keep her face secret.

Snow snow snow

The heavy snow definitely brings since two thirds of the guests who were supposed to come to China to attend the wedding just saw their flights canceled without any chance to get to any other flight, including relatives who are a very important part of the ceremony. We finally decided to maintain the ceremony on sunday and will proceed skight changes to it. That saddens us a lot but there's nothing we can do about the weather.

lundi 15 mars 2010

The ones who follow this blog may remind I posted this picture in October about a chinese wedding. Well, in less than 2 weeks I'll marry a chinese woman in my hometown. The next weeks are going to be quite busy and I may lack of time to keep on posting on an almost-daily basis like I used to do over the last months.

Chinese wedding 4/4

Oct 2009
The new husband and wife will finally stay on stage while all the guests eat. An entertainer will speak for a long time, making some jokes, ask questions and so on to the couple and their parents. Finally the couple will dissapear and come back with other clothes and meet each guest to thank them for being here. Give a candy to women from hand to mouth. For men, the choice is between a cigarette and a small glass of strong alcohol. At 15:30, everything is over. A few people will now go to the couple's home to visit it.
I forgot to mention the entertainer ended his work by singing some awfull karaoke for 30 minutes with a vey bad sound system.

Chinese wedding 3/4

Oct 2009
Finally, after many other jokes, he's allowed to take his wife out of her parent's home. They get to the restaurant in this car. Red of course : that's the color of luck. When they arrive to the restaurant, they're welcomed by many firecrackers.

Chinese wedding 2/4

Oct 2009
The day after, quite early in the morning, the future husband comes to the bride's home to pick her up. Girls keep the door closed and try to forbid him to enter. Many jokes are then exchanged, and the door opens a little bit to let the husband gives some presents to the girls, as you can see on the first picture.

Oct 2009

Once the door is a little bit opened, the husband use strength to get in the flat.

Oct 2009
But the same thing starts again with the bride's bedroom, where she stays with her closest friends.

Chinese wedding 1/4

Oct 2009
The evening before the wedding, each familly rented a restaurant for a dinner. The day after, the two famillies met for the real wedding ceremony. When we arrived all the tables were waiting for the guests with candies, fruit juice, cola, alcohols, tea and even some cigarettes.
Oct 2010
Here is how the table looked like after the food was brought. No space left. And some food still ahd to be brought on the table.

To the future

This morning's picture was the last from my latest trip to China. I will probably go back to China around June. Until then, I'll probably use some pictures or stories from previous trips. Next week should be used for bouddha-related pictures shot in Japan and China. And later... I don't know yet.
I used to travel a lot in Japan, but the end of 2005 brought a radical change to my life. That change is the girl on the picture below. She is from China and i'm trying to organize my wedding with her.
Anybody got an idea about a destination for a honeymoon trip ?

Take off

Prochaines aventures lointaines vers Septembre.

Midnight is coming in France; I just got up. In about 5 hours I'll leave for the airport. When I came, the Air France plane had great entertainement on board, such as games and 80 movies you can watch whenever you want, instead of a dozen that are continuously repeated. I hope to get the same on the way back home, without the 5 seconds fall we experienced last time.
Yesterday night was used for a last restaurant.... and we talked a little bit about wedding once more, buying home, wedding dress, wedding suit. We almost visited a flat on the way back.
Suitcase is loaded with chinese food.
Next adventures probably around September.

A new story begins

The future gets me minding more than ever... A double mixed wedding to organize, with complicated visa matters to deal with, a cultural differencies to take into consideration. I feel very hard to read my father in law's mind about that point. He look depressed. Although we already talked a lot, we got a lot of things to talk about. But since this evening, he almost didn't talk to me or even Wenzhu. I have to set another trip next summer to get my familly meet Wenzhu's. A couple of friends wishes to join me to discover China this summer, and I'm afraid I won't have much time to take care of them, considering what's going on.

On brighter things, I'll be shopping this afternoon, to get typical chinese things back to my familly as usual.
Finally, the quality of the light was very good all along the week, and i have a good hope to publish good pictures next week.

jeudi 29 janvier 2009

Mariage franco-chinois

Well, the big topic came out yesterday night, one day sooner than expected. Seems Wenzhu's parents agree for us to marry, although they seemed to be shocked at the moment, and suddenly looking older. Mum suddenly concentrated on showing us her new clothes, while dad concentrated on TV. But he finally began to talk seriously, saying the chinese requirements about this kind of event. And we talked for about two hours. And he looked impressed when I said my familly wanted to meet his and would come to China for this.
We're going to sruggle with things such as buying a home, organizing two ceremonies, admistrative things... Anyway, what is sure is that we can begin to organize a weddinf and marriage between France and China.
